Voting Question: Is Probate going to want my friend’s junky stuff/furniture?

My older friend is going to pass, nothing legally was set up, he was fighting cancer. There is an adult son and daughter. They are for all intense purposes not wanting to deal with anything regarding him anymore over strained relationships or low functioning skills of their own. He has a 1 bedroom apartment full of junky old stuff and maybe 1 newer flat panel tv wtih little value and some silver coin with value. If we let it all go to probate will they want any of his stuff? Friends trying to figure out if we should put it into a storage unit and contact probate at the end regarding it? No idea?
From what I’m reading his kids couldn’t if they wanted to touch his stuff at all without a will. Nor would the even care! They are NOT IN THE PICTURE for all intense PURPOSES at all regarding the end so far.
As I said his kids don’t care if he goes into a paupers grave or anything!
HE is VERY LIKELY no longer of SOUND MIND TO SIGN ANYTHING nor can he pick up a PEN AT ALL!
*I’m trying to decide if I should just put his stuff into storage because it cannot stay in his apartment, the management complex would take it and get rid of it!!!! And if Probate laws show that somehow that stuff goes to them, state or FED???
