My father died without a will. No spouse – only my brother and I as heirs/next of kin. We already went through probate where I am the executor of account and we have the list of assets that need to be dealt with. One of those assets was a check from my dad’s employer made payable “To The Estate of [dad’s name]”. How do I deposit this check? He has a bank account I am trying to close, but it is located out of state. Do I need to deposit it there or set up an account in my dad’s name just to deposit? We don’t have anything else we would need in the account. My dad had less than $10k in assets and we are not having to pay off any debts. Is there a way that, as executor, I can deposit the check in my account?
